Google Groups has recently gone through a major upgrade adding lots of functionality, including good privacy options. If any local Labour group wants to form a virtual space where you can discuss, organise, share information and files Google Groups is a really good option.
Google Groups may not be specificly tailored to Policital organisation as say CivicCRM but it sure is easier to use and set up. Also with it being a Google service you don't have to worry about hosting or outages and you can set the group to be entirely private if required.
