You can always tell a cold call due to the couple of seconds delay after you've answered the call. Most call centers use predictive dialers which are particularly nasty pieces of software for the caller and callee.
This morning the Daily Telegraph gave me a cold call, inviting me to partake in a spectacular offer that would save me money or something and change my life for ever.
My reply:
Me:"There is no way I would ever subscribe to the Daily Telegraph given its political stance"
Cold Caller:"Sure you don't want to see what the other side are saying"
Me:"Absolutely not thanks"
Call ended.
How did the telegraph get my number as I'm on TPS? I think I must have given it to them when my Dad asked me to sign up to his works online Fantasy Football League.
